Supply Tip of the Week
It's been years since I've been a supply teacher and I decided to take some time off full time teaching and go back to casual hours. This week was my first week back. Each day was different with both positive and negative moments. I have made it a goal to reflect frequently and share any tips that I gain from all experiences, the good and the bad.
Tip of the Week - Acknowledge your students
We all know that praise can motivate a student and we try to acknowledge children's positive behaviour as frequently as possible. Some teachers are natural at this and some do it less than others.

A way that helped me remember was by focusing two areas:
- Behaviour and
- Effort

I draw up 2 columns on a whiteboard or use the following print out and tell the students at the beginning of the day that I'd love to record the names of the students who model great behaviour and effort throughout the day, for their teacher to see. I let them know that their name can appear more than once.

Ruby Role Model
Unpack behaviour expectations and discuss choices that a 'Ruby Role Model' would make in and outside of the classroom

Emerald Effort
Discuss what effort looks like and sounds like and what the students can do to help them put their best effort in while learning.

Unpack the following:

At the end of the day, I give a certificate out to a select amount of children who's names appeared the most. The certificates are the 'Ruby Role Model Award' and the 'Emerald Effort Award.'

These certificates recognise students positive behaviour and acknowledge effort. I feel happier leaving the classroom knowing that the children who put make an effort to do the right thing are going home knowing that their efforts were noticed.
